Happy 45th Anniversary Nebraska NRDs!

Happy 45th Anniversary Nebraska NRDs!

On July 1, 1972, Nebraska's future changed with the creation of the first Natural Resources Districts. First not only in Nebraska but in the nation! No other state had taken the plunge into consolidating its special purpose districts into all-purpose districts like Nebraska. Instead of 154 subdivisions with specific duties and small budgets and little or no staff, we now have 23 districts with budgets big enough to fund large projects and small while still maintaining local control.

The Nemaha NRD has a locally elected 21-member board of directors with representatives from Falls City to Bennet, Nebraska City to Steinauer. Every month these dedicated men and women meet to consider policies, programs, budgets, and concerns about water, soil, flooding, wildlife, forestry, and much more. Public meetings are held every second Thursday of the month at the Tecumseh headquarters beginning at 8:00 p.m. from April-October and 7:00 p.m. from November-March.

July 1 falls on a Saturday this year, so no formal celebration is scheduled on that date. But feel free to stop in our office anytime after July 1 to join in the celebration and pick up a momento of the anniversary.
