The Nemaha Natural Resources District operates four water-based recreation areas that are open year-round.

A Nemaha NRD park permit is required at Kirkman's Cove, Iron Horse Trail Lake, and Wirth Brothers Lake.

Recreation Rules & Regulations
Kirkman’s Cove Lake Watershed Management

Swimming areas are designated at Kirkman's Cove, Iron Horse Trail Lake, and Wirth Brothers Lake.  However, no lifeguards are on duty.

Weekly bacteria & toxic, blue green algae counts are now available from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality for the beaches at Kirkman’s Cove and Iron Horse Trail Lake. Click here to view the current counts.

RV and tent camping is available at Kirkman's Cove and Iron Horse Trail Lake.  Camp sites are based on a first-come, first-served basis.  Tent camping is available at Wirth Brothers Lake.  The maximum stay for all areas is 14 days during any 30-day period.
