Return to Board Meeting Updates

2007 Board Meeting Report Tecumseh – Bids, bids, and more bids topped the agenda for the Nemaha Natural Resources District’s monthly board of directors meeting held Thursday, March 8. With spring almost upon us, the board voted on bids for dam construction, hay harvesting, and the annual audit, among others. Four bids were considered for the construction of two small cost-share dams in Johnson County. Bids were sought for structures on the Kenneth Brinkman and the Brandt Family properties near Tecumseh and Burr, respectively. Carstens Construction from Pickrell submitted the low bid of $49,472 to build both dams, which was well below the engineer’s estimate of $58,667.10. Work on the two grade stabilization structures is slated to be completed with 45 days after weather conditions allow for startup. Six more spots where campers can hook their RVs to electricity will soon be available at Kirkman’s Cove. Preliminary dirt work was completed last fall for the additional camping pads, which will be near the existing 10 pads on the beach side of the lake. On Thursday the board approved a bid of $7,107 from Al Wusk Electric, Sterling, to finish the electrical portion of the project. The added spots should be available for campers this summer. Interest in harvesting hay ground at Kirkman’s Cove near Humboldt and Iron Horse Trail Lake near DuBois was a bit higher than in past years. Five bids were submitted for the 46 acres of mixed/native grasses at Kirkman’s Cove, and five bids were also submitted for the 26 acres of mostly mixed native grasses and some brome at Iron Horse Trail Lake. The high bids of $2,310 from Eldon Snoke for the hay at Kirkman’s and $327.67 from Dirk Dobrovolny for the Iron Horse tracts were approved. All hay must be removed before September 1. Chemicals required for maintenance of NRD recreation areas and on various watershed dams will be purchased from the Midwest Farmers Coop, Elmwood. Two quotes were received for the weed control chemicals, and the NRD board approved the low bid of $2,329. Art White & Associates from Tarkio, MO, will provide the NRD with auditing services for the next three years. White, who has performed the District’s audit for the past several years, submitted the low bid of $3,400 per year for his company’s services. Bids were received from a total of five companies. Last month the board was presented with a request to allow motorcycles to use the NRD’s public recreation lakes for ice racing during the winter. However, staff investigated the request, and liability concerns were expressed by both directors and staff. Therefore, the board voted not to allow motorized vehicles on the frozen lake surfaces of its public recreation areas. The next regular meeting of the Nemaha Natural Resources District board of directors will be on Thursday, April 12, 2007, with the board meeting time returning to 8:00 p.m. at the NRD headquarters, 62161 Highway 136, Tecumseh. Individual committees will meet immediately prior to the board meeting. |
