Free Park Permit Weekend May 22-23

Free Park Permit Weekend May 22-23

Each year the Nemaha Natural Resources District sets the weekend prior to the Memorial Day weekend as its Free Park Permit Weekend. This year it falls on May 22-23 and is observed at Kirkman’s Cove near Humboldt, Iron Horse Trail Lake near DuBois, Duck Creek Recreation Area north of Peru, and Wirth Brothers Lake near Tecumseh. Though a vehicle permit issued by the Nemaha NRD is normally required at these parks, the NRD board has proclaimed this weekend as a free weekend. Visitors have an opportunity to try out the parks at no cost for these two days and perhaps decide if they wish to purchase a permit for future visits.

Annual permits cost just $15 and admit your vehicle to all four parks through December 31. The most efficient method for obtaining your permit is through our website with your credit card payment. Permits are usually mailed within a day or two of application. You could, of course, also come to our office to buy your permit during regular office hours (M-F, 8-4:30).  Keep in mind that electrical hookup fees for camping are still required during this free weekend.

Over $50,000 was collected last year from the sale of both annual and one-day NNRD park permits, which are not the same as Nebraska Game & Parks Commission park entry permits. Proceeds from the sale of the permits are returned directly to these parks for ongoing maintenance and improvements. For example, two new, concrete restrooms were installed at Kirkman’s Cove and Iron Horse Trail Lake recently.
