Beach Monitoring Resumes May 1st

The Nemaha NRD will resume its weekly beach monitoring program for Kirkman’s Cove, Wirth Brothers, Iron Horse Trail Lake, and Duck Creek Recreation Area Lakes this May. Weekly samples will be collected and analyzed for toxic algae and E.coli from May through September. Results will be available on the Nemaha NRD’s website www.nemahanrd.org under the “Beach Monitoring Results” tab or under “Health Alerts” and posted on Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE)’s website.

The NRD would like to remind everyone that the weekly test is only one method of protection for you, your children, and your pets. Samples are collected every Monday and results are not back until late Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. Weather conditions can cause algal blooms to explode, sometimes overnight. If you see a green tint to the water and are feeling uneasy, please just trust your gut and stay out of the water! If you would like more information about toxic algae please visit NDEE’s website and search for “Beach Watch”.
