Celebrating Earth Day, Every Day
Celebrating Earth Day, Every Day
Since 1972 Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts have worked to preserve and protect the State’s Natural Resources. Each NRD is unique in the challenges faced but collectively their mission is to protect life, protect property, and protect the future. This is achieved through 12 responsibilities as directed by LB1357:
- Erosion prevention and control
- Prevention of damages from flood water and sediment
- Flood prevention and control
- Soil conservation
- Water supply for beneficial uses
- Development, management utilization and conservation of groundwater and surface water
- Pollution control
- Solid waste disposal and sanitary drainage
- Drainage improvement and channel rectification
- Development and management of fish and wildlife habitat
- Development and management of recreational and park facilities
- Forestry management
The Nemaha NRD utilizes a very small portion of property taxes to carry out its duties (0.029996 per $100 in property valuation). The frequent and damaging floods of the past have been dramatically reduced and mitigated because of a series of over 400 flood control structures installed in partnership with the USDA within the Nemaha NRD alone. Programs like the Soil and Water Conservation Program, the Tree Program, or Nebraska Buffer assist landowners in implementing conservation practices on private land that lead to the long-term protection of our precious natural resources. Cost share for tools such as flowmeters or soil moisture sensors equip agricultural producers with knowledge to help make better economic decisions for their operation. Recreation areas managed by the NRD showcase the splendor of southeast Nebraska’s natural resources.
