Kirkman's Cove was opened in May of 1988 and was designed to be a multipurpose flood control recreation area as part of the Long Branch Watershed project.

- May-September, NRD staff test water at the swimming beach for presence of toxic algae; test results are available on the Nebraska Department of Environment & Energy's website, this website, and social media; tests above 8 ppb require a health alert in effect until the water tests below this limit.
- No hunting or possession of firearms allowed
- Fireworks are not allowed.
