Nemaha NRD to Host Educational Tree Planting at Duck Creek Recreation Area

Tecumseh, Neb. – The Nemaha Natural Resources District (NRD) will host an educational tree planting with local second-grade students at Duck Creek Recreation Area on Thursday, October 15. Students will learn about the importance of trees and gain hands-on experience planting them.

The event is part of the Trees for Nebraska Towns Initiative, an effort of PlantNebraska and the Nebraska Forest Service. Through the initiative, the Nemaha NRD received 10 trees for the educational planting project at Duck Creek Recreation Area.

Students will learn about the benefits of trees, how to properly plant and care for them, and why trees are important to our communities as they work alongside Nemaha NRD staff to plant trees at the recreation area.

In addition to providing shade and beauty, trees offer increased comfort, support better health, provide energy savings and contribute to a wide range of social, economic, and environmental benefits. Despite this, Nebraska has lost far more trees than have been planted in recent decades. Many challenges contribute to this decline, including extreme weather, insects, disease, and lack of diversity.

The Trees for Nebraska Towns program provides high-quality trees for community projects, celebrations and educational events that promote trees and fall planting. By providing trees for these projects, the program helps address the decline in Nebraska’s tree populations and encourages the planting of new trees across the state. The program also works to increase appreciation and awareness of the significant value of trees in Nebraska, with an emphasis on species diversity and higher-impact projects.

The tree planting event will begin at 10 a.m. and include a hands-on educational demonstration, with students working alongside Nemaha NRD staff to help plant the trees.

PlantNebraska’s Trees for Nebraska Towns Initiative is funded by the Nebraska Environmental Trust and the USDA Forest Service through grants received by PlantNebraska and the Nebraska Forest Service.
