Students Help Plant Trees at Duck Creek Recreation Area

Tecumseh, Neb. – Despite a chilly November morning, 57 second-grade students from Calvert Elementary joined the Nemaha Natural Resources District (NRD) at Duck Creek Recreation Area, north of Peru, on Thursday, November 5, for an educational tree planting.
As part of the event, students learned about the importance of trees, proper planting techniques, and the benefits trees provide to people and wildlife. Working alongside Nemaha NRD staff, students helped plant eight trees in the day-use area north of the beach.

The hands-on experience gave students an opportunity to put what they learned into practice while helping improve the recreation area. As the trees grow, they will help create a healthier, more diverse landscape.
The Nemaha NRD appreciates the students and teachers who participated and helped make the planting a success.
The planting was made possible through the Trees for Nebraska Towns Initiative, an effort of PlantNebraska and the Nebraska Forest Service to promote tree planting and increase awareness of the benefits of community trees. The initiative is funded by the Nebraska Environmental Trust and the USDA Forest Service.

The Nemaha Natural Resources District is one of Nebraska’s 23 Natural Resources Districts, serving eight counties in southeast Nebraska within the Nemaha River Basin. The District is governed by a publicly elected board and focuses on flood and erosion control, soil conservation, water quality and quantity, and outdoor recreation. Learn more at www.nemahanrd.org.
